Conservation Services and Consulting

The Conservation Department at the MAC is a full-service conservation facility for archaeological objects and collections.  Our primary purpose is to treat and preserve the archaeological heritage of the State of Maryland.  We also provide contract conservation services to other institutions and individuals.

We can treat the full range of archaeological materials, and specialize in the treatment of waterlogged organic materials, metals from submerged sites, and the assessment and stabilization of bulk collections.  We also provide consulting services in handling, treatment, and storage for archaeological projects, individual objects and collections.

If you would like to contact our conservation staff for a consultation or  download our Service Rates and Work Order Request forms - follow the links below.

The State of Maryland has created standards for handling and packing archaeological materials for long-term storage that work within the Federal guidelines for collections 36CFR79. These standards are presented in Technical Update No. 1 of the Standards and Guidelines for Archaeological Investigations in Maryland: Collections and Conservation Standards Seifert 1999-Revised 2005.
