Site Cluster 3:
St. Leonard Creek Area
The final
locus of sites, in St. Leonard, Maryland, is not so much a look
at a neighborhood of planters or tenants as much as it is an
examination of the internal community within one plantation
over time. Archaeological excavations at Jefferson Patterson
Park and Museum focusing on the King’s Reach and Smith’s
St. Leonard sites have exposed two plantation centers that were
both built and inhabited by the wealthy Protestant planter,
Richard Smith, Jr., and his family, servants, and slaves. (King
1999). [16]
