Birds

Maryland is the home of an estimated 410 species of birds. We have identified 218 birds on our property with over 70 that have been spotted nesting here.

The bird list for JPPM was compiled from 1994 to the present, mostly by Tyler Bell, while he was employed at The Academy of Natural Sciences Estuarine Research Center as a biologist.  Some observations were reported by other observers. Mr. Bell has observed all but 2 of the listed species for the park. He has been birding actively in southern Maryland since 1990. Because of the varied habitats at JPPM, the species list is quite extensive. There are still a few expected species missing from the list. If you see something not present on the list, please feel free to email him with your sighting! belljt@si.edu

There are two bird lists, an alphabetical list and a taxonomic list. Each bird common name in the alphabetical list is connected to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The scientific names are connected to Maryland DNR's “Animal Bits!” and National Wildlife Federation’s eNature web site.

Each bird in the Taxonomic order common names list is linked to U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey, Patuxent Wildlife Research Center- Patuxent Bird Identification Info Center. Scientific names are linked to the What Bird web site and eNature.
