2009 SPEAKER SERIES “From Boats to Bones: Archaeology is in the Details” Kick-off lecture

Dr. Martin Gallivan, College of William & Mary

Brief business meeting will conclude with guest speaker. Dr. Gallivan’s presentation “: Werowocomoco Archaeology of the Powhatan Center Place”, kicks off a 6-part Archaeology Speaker Series, “From Boats to Bones: Archaeology is in the Details”. Recent excavations at Werowocomoco, the capital of the Powhatan chiefdom, have uncovered the large chief’s house described by Captain John Smith in 1607.    Basket Making  - Ribbed Basket

Join us for this engaging 3-part series on basket making techniques. Mitzi Poole, local artisan, demonstrates the process and assists you in completing your own baskets. Learn basic techniques of rib basket construction using round and flat reed. Each participant will make a small rib basket from commercial material.

Find out what real archaeologists do. See the past on the land around you. Excavate and identify artifacts at our on-site 18th century Smith-St. Leonard plantation site. Work with artifacts in the MD Archaeological Conservation Laboratory.

 Learn how to make fire without matches, and how to use natural things to make life easier. Many hands-on activities and games; work on a shelter, make string, identify animal tracks and signs, and other skills used many years ago.

Join us for a guided tour of Point farm, estate home and retreat of the late Mr. & Mrs. Jefferson Patterson. Built in 1932, this Colonial Revival brick house was designed by noted female architect Gertrude Sawyer.
